Changing status of women in independent India

The world celebrated International Women’s Day yesterday - 8th March. A question may arise - How far has the status of women changed in modern and post-modern times?

The position of women has changed a lot in modern times. Clearly women have made tremendous strides towards equality in recent decades however; we still live in a society in which the worth of women is measured in their physical appearance and not their intellectual contribution or talents.

It is not an unknown secret that many women are paid considerably less than men for doing the same type of work. What effect does this obvious gap between men and women have on our nation’s female population? The effect of this is the unconscious perpetuation of the understanding that women are inferior to men in our society.

This also stands in direct contradiction to the claim that we are all created equal. This gap between men and women can be seen in countless social arenas, such as, the workplace, the average household, educational institutions and even in our nation’s government.

In the society, the role of women is getting bigger. Women are doing man’s work and sometimes women do it better. It may be because women are more patient and more intelligent. The concept of earlier days was that only man can work, because society thought that cleaning the house and taking care of the children were the only things women were able to do.

This has changed a lot because now both, men and women, are working and taking care of home. Sometimes it is the woman who gets the money to survive and man is the one who takes cares of the children, and while it was embarrassing for men in the past, now it is normal.

We have seen a woman P.M. in our country - one of the most powerful and undoubtedly the most efficient P.M.s we ever had - Mrs. Indira Gandhi. We also see a woman President - Mrs. Pratibha Patel. So a woman has the capability to hold the highest post of the country as well.

Be it in politics (Jayalalitha, Mamta Banerjee, Mayawati - love them, hate them, but you cannot ignore them), sports, cinema or literary field, we see women dominating the scene side-by-side with men.

Hence the position of women has changed drastically in post independent India. The condition in the rural areas which has more or less remain unchanged (as portrayed in soaps like Balika Vadhu & Na Aana is Desh Laado)are exceptions to this changing scenario.

I agree with you. Women are definitely making their mark in the world today. One thing which should make all women proud is the fact that Indra Nooyi, chairman of Pepsico is the world’s highest paid executive. Although the world scenario is definitely changing, India needs to change a lot and I am not sure when. Child marriage, Girl child killing, dowry deaths etc are some of the issues which are still prevalent. I hope this country wakes up

I agree with Mukherjee and Ranjit,

women have proved themself and are highly competitive with men.

now that women have achieved what they need, do you feel the necessity of pampering them with 33% reservation, NCW, WCD and biased laws like DV and 498A ?

Don’t you feel that there should be gender equality. Let them compete in this competitive world.

Ranjit, now that i don’t have proofs of child marriage and girl child killing i wont comment on them.

But Dowry Deaths and Dowry Related Issues......do you think these are really happening? According to recent Supreme Court statement 98% Cases of dowry related cases [IPC 498A] are false and fabricated. And do you know how many harassed men suicide bcoz of these biased laws?

Since women had been over dominated by men once upon a time, they have the right to enjoy the reservation rights at present. The dowry system, child marriage & female infanticide is very much a harsh reality of rural India. An evil like dowry system is prevalent in cities as well.

I guess it is a phase where the nation is facing a cultural shift phase. There is a big section of the population which values conservative ideals, and then there is a new section which has this ultra modern outlook. There is going to be a lot of friction between these two groups, but what is more important is the large section of people in between (The Indian middle class) will be rediscovering themselves.

India is so big that its almost like various different countries within it. India is impossible to characterize with any generalization be it good or bad. Fact remains that people get oppressed by zealots, government officials, etc just like any 3rd world country.

Child marriages and Infant killings are happening, but they r on declining note compared to previous years. and lets hope they will be no such kind of things in future.

infact child marriages are less in our country compared to others
but reg dowry, i deny with your statement. Now a days no one demands dowry but due to traditions some families offer dowry...remember i say offer.

And because of non compatibility present day married women feel themselves harassed and used biased laws to fulfill their personal grudge.

i don’t say that women should be not be liberal........but not on the cost of men.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY MEANS EQUAL OPPORTUNITY.....NO 33% AND NO BIASED LAWS.
LET THE CAPABLE WIN THE RACE.

I totally agree with you when you say that female infanticide & child marriage has decreased. That has happened because our society has become a modern one, but it has not completely stopped. The dowry system is very much prevalent. I know of living examples from among my friends & relatives where women had been tortured because of this. There may be CERTAIN families who themselves want to offer dowry, but there are MANY families who demand dowry. People who demand dowry & people who offer dowry are both equally guilty of the crime. I do not think that women have to use men as scapegoats to fulfill their personal grudges. But of course everyone has their own personal views. It may be your view. But definitely NOT mine.

Improvement of living conditions and education helps to remove old superstitions ignorance.
Modern women can now make choices in their lives with out having to marry and bear numerous unwanted children as was ”just their lot in life”.
They now have choices to make a valuable contribution to improve their society any way they like : through business, politics, the arts - what ever.
Men have always had these choices.

Married couples can choose between them what suites them the best and if they want to have children or not.
As life improves in the bigger cities it will evntually although slowly impove the rural areas too.
This will be advantagous for men, with mutual respect.

Hi Somshurva,

The article was really interesting.. the progress which women have made in the last 50 years is really commendable. More than the urban areas, I find the women in the rural areas who are now being financially independent deserve a standing ovation. These women have struggled more than us to reach where they are now.

You are so right Somshuvra, the condition of women in rural India has not changed a wee bit. Though soaps like Balika Badhu and Na Ana.... do exaggerate to some extent, girl child is still looked down upon (of course that is the case in most urban North Indian societies too) and widows have a horrible life. On the other hand financial freedom and a positive change in the societal mind set has improved the lives of many urban women.

However, the likes of Pratibha Patil and Indira Nooyi do not form even 1% of women in our society. So they actually cannot be the yardstick to measure the progress made by women in India.

Somshuvra, You said it perfectly in this article. Jawaharlal Nehru said, ‘You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women’. The Beijing Declaration at the Fourth World Conference on Women (1995) point 13 says, ‘Women’s empowerment and their full participation on the basis of equality in all spheres of society, including participation in the decision-making process and access to power, are fundamental for the achievement of equality, development and peace’.

The principle of gender equality is contained in the Indian Constitution, legal system and government policies.

There are many examples of how much women have achieved when given the opportunity. In India there are women political leaders, astronauts, athletes and writers, who are role models for young women.

Many women work twice as many hours as men because they carry out most of the household responsibilities as well as working outside their homes. Their household work is unpaid and unrecognised. Equal sharing of responsibilities for the family by men and women will help further improve the status of women in India. If husbands show love and respect to their wives, and parents show they value their daughters equally to their sons, this will provide a good model for the next generation.

Rajagopalan,

u r right, women empowerment is in full participation, but not in right direction or in meaningful way.

In my view empowerment means equipping women with good education and moral values, give then trainings of different skilled work, trainings in sports and all the other things which are necessary for competing in this world.

But present women empowerment in India is misdirected with laws like 498A, DV Act Child Custody [which leads to fatherless child / Orphans] and 33% reservations [in my view reservation concept should be removed for all categories..not only for women]

Due to the above mentioned laws so many old age parents and sisters have been to jail without any direct or indirect involvement. So many children [future of India] have become fatherless.
Many families are shattered bcos of these meaningless empowerment in the name of women.

Do you really prefer all this to happen?
