A new genre of actors has been born in the perspective of Indian cinema - they are not termed as heroes as they are not the typical “heroes”.
In films of yesteryears, the Indian audiences have seen actors like the Big B, Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor and many more (the list is endless) doing roles which define the typical Hindi cinema hero. They were the protagonist of the film who were supposedly flawlessly handsome and self-sacrificing, suffering a lot in their journey of life in the hands of “villains” and at the end good wins over evil. They would fight the “villains” single-handedly - it does not matter how absurd it looked, for the audiences wanted it that way and clapped and whistled while the their on-screen heroes fought with the baddies and delivered dialogues to die for. They were the conventional ‘goody-goody’ types.
Today’s actors have changed the audiences’ way of viewing the main characters in the Hindi film industry. Emraan Hashmi, whose appearances in ‘Kalyug’, ‘Gangster’ and ‘Aawarapan’ portrayed him in characters who are gray, reckless and negative in appearance, says he enjoys such roles compared to conventional ‘goody-goody’ heroes. He says he feels that there is no growth or realism in the characters of “heroes”. He played the protagonist in ‘Gangster’ an ‘Aawarapan’ and yet he was not the conventional Hindi cinema hero - flawless in character, typically good looking or self-sacrificing.
Also, actors like Rahul Bose, Ranvir Shorey, Vinay Pathak, Kay Kay Menon and Irrfan Khan - who more often than not play the central characters in many of their films - are not typically good looking, “goody goody” heroes. Hence they can be termed as “Actors” more than “Heroes” (inspite of them playing main roles in the Hindi films). These actors have played different types of roles in different films - mixture of good and bad - like for example Irrfan Khan and Kay Kay Menon in Life in a Metro.
Hence Indian cinema is seeing the birth of “Actors” as the new generation continues to love, adore and admire them. For example who cannot but love “Siddharth Bose” (played by Rahul Bose) and laugh at ” Nanno” (played by Ranvir Shorey) in Pyaar ke Side Effects.
So, we the Indian audiences, give these new generation of actors a big warm welcome as they keep on entertaining us in their versatility of performances.
